Coach Gerry is 68 years old. He still demonstrates every drill he prescribes.

Most coaches over forty work from a clipboard. Most under forty demo movements with form they'd correct in their athletes. Coach Gerry has done every stretch, every drill, every exercise on this program himself — same as he did at twenty-eight, thirty-eight, forty-eight, fifty-eight. The standard is simple: if he can't do it, no athlete will be asked to.

Injuries are rare in this program — and they're rare for a reason. The exercises were designed by someone who has to recover from them. The session length was set by someone who knows what fatigue does to form. The "no heavy weights" policy isn't a quirk — it's the considered position of a coach who, four decades in, can still show you what he wants.

It's the kind of standard that used to be common in coaching and almost isn't anymore.

SAFEST isn't an acronym we picked because it's clever. It's the five components every young athlete needs developed in proportion — and the word the components spell is what the program protects, every session, every athlete, every year.

Speed

Mechanics first. Top-end speed is built on technique, not effort. Get the form right and the times follow.

A

Agility

Change-of-direction, deceleration, reaction. The skills that separate athletes from runners.

F

Flexibility

Range of motion built through dynamic movement, not static holds. Mobility that transfers to sport.

E

Endurance

Conditioning that fits the sport. We don't build distance runners by accident — we build the engine the athlete actually needs.

Strength

Bodyweight first. Medicine balls and implements when warranted. Nothing over fifteen pounds, ever. The strength that transfers — built without breaking the athlete who's still growing.

Training

The whole, not the parts. Speed without flexibility breaks. Strength without endurance plateaus. We train the five attributes as one integrated system — because that's how the body actually works.

We do less, better.

Every choice in this program is a choice against what the youth sports industry has normalized. The reasoning isn't ideology — it's forty years of watching what works on real athletes.

Sessions cap at 60 minutes.

Research on youth athletic development consistently shows that shorter focused sessions produce better skill acquisition and lower injury rates than long ones. We front-load the highest-value work — speed, mechanics, technique — when athletes are fresh. We don't fill time.

Groups cap at 15 athletes.

Always. When demand grows, we add sessions and coaches — never bodies on the field. Every athlete gets eyes on every rep, every day. The mega-club model doesn't fit our standard for what coaching means.

Movement before sport.

Most kids arrive wanting sport-specific drills. We start with the basic movement patterns underneath. An athlete with mastery of the fundamentals improves at every sport. An athlete without it plateaus and gets hurt.

We start at 13.

Most programs race to sign up six-year-olds. We don't. Thirteen is the age when an athlete can still correct bad habits, still absorb real coaching, and is finally strong enough to handle the work. Come to us when the real development can begin.

Good coaching is built on shared knowledge. Coaches at any level are welcome to visit a session, see the work in person, and demonstrate the drills with us. We've never believed in keeping the method behind closed doors.
